Enfant solitaire, Raymond Depardon prend ses premiers clichés dans la ferme familiale. A 16 ans, il monte à Paris, où il devient l'assistant du photographe Gilles Foucherand. Celui-ci est bientôt associé à l'agence Delmas, qui envoie Depardon en Afrique pour suivre l'expédition SOS-Sahara en 1960. Le jeune homme en revient avec un reportage très remarqué lors de sa publication dans Paris-Match, puis couvre les guerres d'Algérie et du Vietnam. En 1966, il co-fonde la mythique agence Gamma, pour laquelle il part en reportage au Tchad, au Biafra ou encore à Prague : le film consacré à l'immolation de l'étudiant Jan Palach deviendra d'ailleurs son premier court-métrage en 1969. Héritier du cinéma direct, dont les chefs de file ont pour nom Richard Leacock ou Pennebaker, Depardon suit Giscard lors de sa campagne de 1974, mais le Président attendra 28 ans pour autoriser la diffusion de ce documentaire qu'il avait pourtant commandé. Auteur de plusieurs courts-métrages qui le voient parcourir le monde, le cinéaste réalise en 1977 son deuxième long, Numéros zéro, une saisissante plongée dans la rédaction du Matin de Paris. Patience, discrétion, attention de tous les instants : telles sont les règles d'or du cinéaste, qui se fait le témoin du quotidien des photographes de presse (Reporters, César du meilleur documentaire en 1982) ou d'une équipe de policiers (Faits divers), et s'immisce dans des institutions aussi fermées que l'univers hospitalier (l'asile psychiatrique de San Clemente, le service des Urgences de l'Hôtel-Dieu) ou la justice, avec Délits flagrants (1994), qui lui vaut un deuxième César.
